CHARACTER INFO

• Character Name: Frodo Baggins
• Character Age: 34
• Character Canon: The Lord of the Rings
• Canon Point: Travelling through the marshes with Sam and Gollum in Two Towers.

• Character History: Here

• Character Personality:

— Selfless: Frodo's grandest gesture is offering to carry The One Ring to Mount Doom, because it can only be destroyed where it was created. When everyone else argued about who was best suited to undertake this task, Frodo stepped up to take it on himself. Where elves, humans and dwarves all had issues with each other, they had none with hobbits, who live peaceful lives and keep to themselves. Thus, no one could argue against it. Being a hobbit also makes it all the more selfless to make this offer, as Frodo had always had a comfortable and peaceful life, and chose to knowingly throw it away.

— Empathetic: This trait shows mostly in the empathy (and sympathy) that Frodo shows for Gollum, but it's significant. The ring makes most people desperate to have it, and if you do have it, you are desperate to keep it. Many will do more or less anything to keep or get their hands on it, including killing those they love. Gollum wants the ring, and Frodo knows he wants the ring. Despite this, Frodo shows him empathy. After carrying the ring, he knows very well the effect it can have on someone, and so he chooses to give Gollum a chance and to show him that understanding. This empathy and care is nearly enough to free Gollum of the vice grip of the ring, but other shit goes wrong and creates a rift between them in the end.

— Friendly: Hobbits are generally friendly, but they are also overall suspicious and unsure of strangers and non-hobbits. Not Frodo, however. Before the ring wears him down, he is interested in getting to know a lot of other people. He's interested in other people's cultures, lives, and experiences, and he'll gladly share a table and a pint or cup of tea with a stranger.

— Cynical: One may argue that this is largely a result of the ring's influence on Frodo, but it is also fact that the ring takes what is already in a person - their wants, their fears, their traits - and amplifies it. Throughout Frodo's journey to Mordor and Mount Doom, he frequently talks about the fact that he doesn't think he'll come back from the trip. He also struggles with the belief that nowhere and no one is safe around the Ring and, because of this, he is alone. He needs his best friend, Sam, there to keep him from losing hope entirely.

— Sheltered: Much of Frodo's knowledge of the world outside the Shire comes from books and stories. He's more curious about it than many hobbits and would also travel much more often, but there is still much that he doesn't know. In contrast to his empathic side, this trait also shows up in relation to Gollum. The first time he sees Gollum, he tells Gandalf how Bilbo should have killed Gollum when he had the chance. Gandalf responds by asking him if he thinks he is capable of deciding who should live or die. Similarly, he's quick to offer the ring to Galadriel, who he likely perceives as purely good.

Over time, Frodo obviously gets less sheltered, but his experiences end up marred by struggle and trauma that makes that life experience incomplete in a different way. Many of the people he meets or hears about can be relatively easily slotted into pure good or pure evil in his mind.

— Evasive: Throughout his journey to take the ring to Mount Doom, Frodo tries to shoulder a lot of the burdens himself and waves away Sam's offers to help. This is also an attempt at shielding Sam from the ring and the despair that he feels, but that ultimately fails when his evasiveness only makes Sam more worried. Frodo doesn't really seem to realise this, though, and doesn't take kindly to Sam pushing him to accept the help or open up more.
